Grove, Bristol’s club sensation with dark, adrenaline-pumping melodies and queer anthems, enlisted Theo to create an integrated visual experience for their performance at Thekla, Bristol. The venue posed significant challenges with a lighting system that was not tailored for synchronised visual displays, primarily due to audience-facing LEDs.
To overcome these challenges, Theo partnered with Matteo Amadio, a prominent lighting designer from Bristol, aiming to achieve a perfect harmony between sound, visuals, and lighting that would encapsulate Grove's intense musical style. Grove provided Theo with essential content, such as logos and videos, along with specific imagery ideas for each song, setting the foundation for the visual narrative.
Theo's process began with discussions with Grove to ensure a clear understanding of the project's scope. Early ideas and sketches were swiftly produced, with Theo transparently outlining the feasible aspects and potential complexities of the visual production. A comprehensive technical run-through was conducted at Strange Brew, which allowed for on-the-spot adjustments and fine-tuning of the synchronisation between Theo's visuals and Matteo's lighting design, each song given a unique visual identity.
Employing a versatile range of tools including MaxMSP, Touchdesigner, C++/GLSL for real-time generative visuals, Blender for 3D objects, Unreal Engine for landscapes and lighting, and hand-drawn elements from Adobe Illustrator/Photoshop, Theo can craft beautiful cohesive shows.
Despite a tight turnaround and a last-minute setlist alteration, Theo demonstrated exceptional adaptability, swiftly modifying the visuals to suit the updated performance flow. The result was a sophisticated visual accompaniment to Grove's one-hour set, which was met with acclaim from both the audience and the performer.
Theo's broad technical skillset, combined with a rich understanding of visual composition derived from their fine art studies, meant they could swiftly and effectively respond to a diverse range of briefs.
